Abilene, TX - Hardin-Simmons had seven players and its head coach honored by the American Southwest Conference, in voting done by the league's coaches and released by the conference on Wednesday.

Senior sweeper Laura Newbrough was named the co-ASC Defensive Player of the Year along with Kelli Jackson of UT-Dallas. Newbrough led a stingy Cowgirl defense that allowed only seven goals the entire season.

Head coach Marcus Wood was named the ASC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career. HSU has a 94-game unbeaten streak in ASC play and has won five straight ASC titles.

Newbrough, along with sophomore goalkeeper Christi Carr, senior midfielder Beth Craig, junior forward Morgan Loyd and freshman midfielder Carlyn Powers were named first-team All-ASC.

Junior defender Kelly Watson and sophomore forward Jordan Morley were named second team.

HSU is 19-1-1 on the year and will play Emory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday in Atlanta.

The Cowgirls also had three players named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. Newbrough and Craig both were first team selections, with 4.0 GPAs. Lindsay Cogburn was named to the second team with a 3.81 GPA.
