ABILENE, TEXAS - Freshman forward Morgan Loyd tied the game in the 86th minute and scored the game winner in the 101st minute as Hardin-Simmons defeated American Southwest Conference rival UT-Dallas, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The teams played a scoreless game until UT-Dallas' Nicole Randall scored unassisted on a missed clear in the front of the net, but the Cowgirls responded 11 seconds later when Loyd struck on a rebound off Whitney Piendak's shot.
In the second overtime, Loyd striped in the game winner from 35 yards out on the left flank on an assist from Marissa Wichkoski, who had lost her girl with a great fake and sent it over to Loyd.
"It was a great win for us," said HSU head coach Marcus Wood. "What can you say about Morgan (Loyd)? A freshman had two amazing goals for us when we needed it. We will see UT-Dallas again, they are a great team. It is always a battle to the end with them."
The game was a rematch of the ASC final of a year ago at Shelton Stadium. That game also went to overtime when a team scored late (UTD) to tie it. HSU eventually won in penalty kicks. The win gives the Cowgirls the inside track to host the ASC Tournament again.
April Johnson was solid in goal for the Cowgirls she stopped eight shots. Catherine Fox had six saves for UTD. The Comets outshot the Cowgirls 20-12 in the game.
HSU won its ninth straight game and moved to 9-0 in ASC play. UTD fell to 8-2-1, 5-1-1 on the year. HSU travels to Ozarks and Austin College next weekend.
