Anyone who spends more than five minutes with Hardin-Simmons head coach Marcus Wood knows that he puts tremendous amounts of energy and focus into Cowgirl soccer. Beginning his eighth season as the Cowgirl coach, Wood has the Cowgirls knocking on the doorstep of being a national contender.
A tireless worker and recruiter, Wood has built a solid program into one that is among the best in the region. The Cowgirls have made the NCAA Tournament in five of Wood's first seven seasons. In 2006 the team advanced to the Elite 8 and ended the year ranked #6 in the NSCAA/Adidas National Rankings.
His teams have not shied away from going against some of the toughest competition in the nation. In the last five years, the Cowgirls have played seven teams that have advanced to at least the Final Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Striving to get to the top of the NCAA ladder, Wood has had to play all of those games on the road, either in the regular season or the NCAA playoffs. The Cowgirls have made trips to Wheaton, Puget Sound, Trinity and Emory in search of the best competition. Although not always successful, the Cowgirls have been competitive in all of those on the road situations.
In the last eight years the Cowgirls are 90-1-3 in games against the American Southwest Conference and have outscored its ASC opponents 613 - 21 in that time. The Cowgirls have won eight straight ASC regular season titles and five straight tournament titles.
